Afro Swiss Families at Afro-Pfingsten - Interactive Book Reading

  • Alte Kaserne Kulturzentrum Winterthur 8 Technikumstrasse Winterthur, ZH, 8403 Switzerland (map)

Afro Swiss Families is back at Afro Pfingsten with another magical gathering!
We’re excited to host an interactive book reading of Deckel drauf und aufbewahrt – Wie Frida ihre schönsten Erinnerungen bewahren wollte, a beautifully illustrated story by Vera Brosgol about a little girl named Frida who tries to preserve everything she loves — only to discover that some things are best kept as memories.

After picking delicious blueberries, Frida learns from her grandmother that you can save them by making jam. Inspired, she begins trying to “save” all her favourite things in jars… until she realises that not everything can (or should!) be bottled up. Instead, she discovers the joy of holding onto special moments through memory.

Following the reading, children will explore this theme creatively by making their own Memory Mason Jars. Using colourful materials, decorations, and prompts, each child will design a jar to hold small keepsakes, notes, or reminders of moments they want to remember. This hands-on activity encourages imagination, reflection, and fine motor skills as children work with textures, colours, and creative designs.

At the end of the session, every child will take home a personalised Memory Jar — a keepsake that celebrates their creativity and reminds them, just like Frida, that memories are treasures worth holding close.
